Meya Tohum founded in 2010 and has been producing Certified Seeds as an "Authorized Seed Company" by the Ministry of Agriculture since 2012. It produces wheat, barley, chickpeas and lentil seeds mainly due to the cultivation of grains and legumes in the region where it operates intensively.
The region covers 14.3% of Turkey's total wheat production with wheat farming in approximately 900,000 hectares of areas and an average wheat production of 3 million tons. In addition, 90% of Turkey's total production takes place in this region with red lentil agriculture in 200,000 hectares of fields and approximately 300 thousand tons of yield. The company, which started its agricultural R&D activities in 2011, completed its infrastructure in order to institutionalize and develop these activities in 2016 and was registered as a "Private Sector Agricultural Research Organization" by the Ministry of Agriculture. It carries out cooperation and joint projects with National and International Agricultural Research Institutes, International Variety Development Programs, Universities and International Seed companies.
In order to meet the increased business volume in 2015, a new and modern Seed Sifting and Packaging facility with an annual processing capacity of 22,000 thousand tons was launched in Diyarbakır 3rd OIZ on an area of 12,000 sqm. In the same year, Genesis Seed started its activities in order to serve foreign markets (Middle East, Russia and Ukraine).
In 2017, the company completed the necessary infrastructure works and was delegated "Laboratory Analysis and Certification" authorization for grain and legume species by the Ministry of Agriculture. The seeds produced since then are certified by physical and physiological tests according to ISTA standards in the said laboratory and guaranteed for the quality of the products to be shipped to the market.
The company has intensified its alternative and facultative studies in R&D activities with the awareness that the development of dams and irrigation facilities under construction in the region will create a change in the production patterns. In this sense; besides grain and legume species, it carries out breeding studies on industrial plants such as cotton, corn, sesame seeds, soybeans and sunflowers, as well as forage crops.
The company which has R&D stations in 8 different Agro-Ecology in Turkey and abroad registered 2 variety of Pasta Wheat, 1 variety of Bread Wheat and 1 variety of Red Lentils by completing the test processes. Currently the official registration test processes for 2 varieties of Bread Wheat, 1 variety of candidate for Pasta Wheat, 1 variety of Barley, 1 variety candidate for Chickpeas and 2 varieties of Cotton with production permission, are continuing.
In 2020, the company increased its capacity with additional investment and launched a new seed processing and packaging facility of 2000 sqm in addition to its facility with a closed area of 4200 sqm. Here, legume seed screening area is separated from the grain area and a better quality production environment is provided with two separate processes. The company, which has a closed area of 6200 sqm on an area of 17500 sqm, has reached 8000 tons of storage and 35,000 tons of seed processing capacity annually.
